Railway Applications
Powerbox supply power products to many of the world leading railway manufacturers. The applications include power supplies for motor control, pre-charging devices and inverters.

Propulsion systems
Today’s propulsion systems are a complex mix of power electronics and intelligent control circuits. The propulsion systems require reliable and well regulated power to the computers and drive circuits. The power converters are the heart of the system, and as a consequence of this they have to be of extreme design.

Powerbox has supplied DC/DC converters for this application for more than a decade. More than 15.000 units are in use in trains, metros, locomotives and similar application all around the world. With field proven MTBF:s over 5 million hours at one of our customers, the quality and reliability of our products are non disputable.

These converters are used in 24, 48 and 110 VDC systems and are available with a mix of 5, 12 and 24 volt outputs, but can be configured to demand.

Battery Charging
Most of today’s rail vehicles are powered by electrical engines either direct from an electrical power line or via a diesel/electric drive system. To provide reliable power these vehicles are powered by a combination of batteries and direct generated power.
The battery charger is often a combination of a power supply and a charger. This chargers need to fulfill all demands of proper and safe charging of the batteries used, as well as a power source for auxiliary systems.
Today’s switchmode technology enables compact and high efficient solutions with a long lifetime. Advanced and temperature compensated charging ensures optimal lifetime of used batteries.

The chargers are available in powers from 500 Watts to 20 kW with AC or DC input. Output voltage depends of the battery type used and how may cells each battery consist of. Most common battery types used are Lead-Acid and NiCad, but new technologies can also be supplied.
The mechanical environment can be from open solutions inside mounted, IP20, to outside mounted applications in sealed boxes meeting IP65 demands in extreme temperatures. The final electrical and mechanical design is always an interaction between the application, the vehicle and the performance needed.

Refurbishment Projects
The very fast increasing demand of capacity of rail vehicles, exceeding the production capacity of the world’s manufacturers of these, has quickly opened up a need of extending the lifetime of a vehicle by refurbishment and modernization. The refurbishment is a way to extend the capabilities in a short time, and saves a lot of direct investments.

Powerbox has been involved in refurbishment projects for high speed trains, commuter trains, wagons and locomotives.
Each of these projects is unique and has involved one or more of the following applications:

  • Modernization of propulsion systems,
  • Upgrading and modernization of battery charging systems.
  • Providing AC power in passenger seats
  • AC power for equipment in Bistro compartment.
  • Powering drivers cabins for displays, air-condition, com radio, intercoms etc.
  • Zero volt start supplies enabling power up of parked trains with discharged batteries.
  • Power for halogen lamps.
However our knowledge and product range fits most other applications needing electrical power.
